Welcome
All aboard for an unforgettable adventure!
Journey through a miniature world brought to life with thousands of feet of winding track, passing through multiple hand-crafted tunnels and crossing many intricate bridges along the way. Every turn offers a new perspective, and with exciting expansions in progress, the adventure is only just beginning.
Inception & Moving forward
What began as a passion project in 1990 has grown into a breathtaking railroad empire. In 2000, it was relocated to its current home in Reno, Nevada, where it now stretches across several thousand feet of track, weaving through dozens of tunnels, bridges, and water features. The line circles the entire property—indoors and out—creating a truly immersive experience.
Every corner tells a story, with handcrafted buildings inspired by real locations around the world. The railroad features three distinct divisions—Alpine, Western Pacific, and Tahoe Junction—each powered by its own dedicated feed. A Zimo DCC control system drives the operation, while LGB locomotives and rolling stock keep the trains rolling smoothly along durable nickel-plated brass track, supported by continuous concrete landscape curbing. Trains run year-round, pausing only when winter snow becomes too deep.
Beyond its engineering marvels, the Alpine and Western Pacific Railroad has become a community treasure. Hosting multiple open houses and charity events, it has proudly raised over half a million dollars in support of both local and national causes.

Meet Hawley
Since 1990, Hawley has been the heart and hands behind the Alpine and Western Pacific Railroad. What began as a backyard project has grown into one of Northern Nevada’s most spectacular garden railroads—complete with handcrafted buildings, thousands of feet of track, and an ever-growing sense of wonder.
A lifelong traveler, Hawley has always loved exploring the world and sharing those experiences with friends and family. His passion for skiing has taken him to destinations across North America and Europe, and today he continues that tradition with his two children. Growing up in a log cabin at Incline Lake, Nevada, surrounded by the beauty of Lake Tahoe, instilled in him a love for both adventure and craftsmanship.
Hawley is also an avid train enthusiast, pouring countless hours into building his own garden railroad and sharing it with the community. He organizes the annual Water & Rails, the largest fundraiser in Northern Nevada for ALS of Nevada, which provides direct support for patients living with Lou Gehrig’s disease. In recognition of his dedication, he was honored with the Steve Rigazio Voice of Courage Award from ALS of Nevada.
More than just a railroad builder, Hawley is a storyteller, adventurer, and community advocate—using his passions to create joy, inspire wonder, and give back in meaningful ways.
